Southern Roots Vegan Bakery is a black-owned family-run company, owned and operated by husband and wife duo, Marcus and Cara Pitts.
San Antonio Natives Marcus and Cara met working in the healthcare field in 2013, once they were married Cara became a full time caregiver for her 98 year old Grandmother Mary Lee. When Marcus made the decision to go plant based, it set Cara on a journey to create meals her grandmother who was born and raised in the South would love to enjoy and that wouldn't lack in taste. Through lots of trial and error playing around with ingredients and recipes she previously created and baked for years, Cara came up with a simple yet delicious donut that friends, family and especially Mary Lee loved! Marcus and Cara regularly served in the children's ministry at their church and started giving out what would later be Southern Roots to the kids and members of the church and it took off! With the love and support of their friends and family they started going to farmers markets and eventually made their way to Tabitha Brown's Very Good Mondays segment on social media which was their first viral exposure. Since launching their business they have been featured on numerous local news segments and in national press. Southern Roots Vegan Bakery was nominated for Best Vegan Bakery by top Vegan publications VegNews & VegOut in 2021.
Southern Roots Vegan Bakery ships nationwide and offers delivery for San Antonio locals, everything they create is homemade, from their now famous assorted dozen cake donuts which comes in Red Velvet, Classic OG (original glaze), and Lemon Drop to their Mary Lee’s lemon cake that is named after Cara’s grandmother who has been so blessed by outpouring support and seeing her name on the packaging for her cake for the first time brought her to tears! Marcus and Cara cannot wait for you to experience why they say their baked goods are so good you won’t believe it’s vegan!
