Southern Roots began when Marcus transitioned to a vegan diet and Cara started developing recipes at home that could bring the familiar taste and comfort of traditional Southern desserts to the table.
At the same time, Cara had stepped away from her corporate career to care for her grandmother, Mary Lee.
What started during a season centered on family ultimately became something much bigger: a bakery created to help other people celebrate, comfort and care for the people they love.
From a home kitchen to nationwide gifting.
Southern Roots didn't begin as a national gifting company. It grew into one, one chapter at a time.
The recipes begin
Recipe development started at home after Marcus transitioned to a vegan lifestyle and Cara left her corporate career to care for her grandmother.
What began as recipe testing became the foundation for the desserts Southern Roots would eventually ship to customers across the country.
Southern Roots officially launches
Southern Roots began selling desserts at local farmers markets in San Antonio while continuing to refine its recipes, packaging and customer experience.
Cara and Marcus also participated in Launch SA's recognized Break Fast & Launch culinary accelerator, helping turn the concept into a growing food business.
One review changed everything
Southern Roots reached a national audience after Tabitha Brown shared Southern Roots desserts with her community.
Orders quickly began arriving from customers across the country. In those early nationwide-shipping days, the growth was very real: packages were packed, loaded up and personally taken to the carrier as Southern Roots expanded far beyond San Antonio.
National recognition follows
As customers across the country discovered Southern Roots, its desserts began receiving national recognition.
Southern Roots was named among the best vegan bakeries in the country offering nationwide shipping and received recognition from PETA.
Features in major national publications introduced even more customers to the bakery, including people who weren't vegan but simply wanted an exceptional dessert.
Southern Roots reaches national retail
Southern Roots products reached the shelves of a national grocer, marking another major chapter in the company's growth.
That experience also helped clarify the company’s long-term focus: creating memorable desserts that can be gifted, shared and shipped directly to the people who matter most.
