7 small Veganuary changes you can actually keep

You don’t need a whole new pantry. Try a few of these and see what sticks.

1. Pick one Meatless Monday

Choose one day a week and keep it simple:

  • Bean chili and cornbread.
  • Pasta with marinara and veggies.
  • Taco night with black beans instead of beef.

If a full day feels like too much, start with Meatless Monday dinners only.

2. Swap your coffee add-ins

Your morning coffee is a perfect place to experiment:

  • Trade dairy creamer for oat, almond, or soy.
  • Skip the whipped cream.
  • Try flavored syrups that are dairy-free.

You’ll taste the change every day, and your body will feel it—without needing a brand-new breakfast routine.

3. Keep vegan snacks at eye level

Stock a few quick, plant-based snacks:

  • Hummus and crackers.
  • Fresh fruit.
  • Trail mix (check for dairy-free chocolate if needed).
  • A box of SRVB cookies on the counter.

When the easy thing is also the vegan thing, Veganuary becomes automatic.

4. Make your default dessert vegan

Instead of asking, “Do we need a vegan option?” flip the script.

Order vegan desserts as the default:

  • Donuts for the office.
  • Cookies for the kids’ sleepover.
  • A cake for the January birthdays.

With SRVB, your box of donuts or cookies looks like “regular” dessert. The difference is what’s missing: dairy, eggs, and nuts—not the flavor.

5. Build one “go-to” vegan meal per person

Ask each person in the house to pick one easy vegan meal they genuinely enjoy.

Maybe that’s:

  • Your go-to veggie stir fry.
  • A big baked potato with plant-based toppings.
  • A simple bean and rice bowl.

Now you have a small Veganuary menu that doesn’t feel like a menu at all—it’s just your life.

6. Make Veganuary social, not secret

Tell people what you’re trying:

  • Invite a friend over for a plant-based dinner.
  • Bring vegan donuts to the office and let people guess they’re dairy-free.
  • Share your favorite finds with family group texts.

Veganuary sticks better when you’re not doing it alone.

7. Pre-order treats so you don’t feel deprived

One reason people quit early: they hit a craving, and there’s nothing around that fits their plan.

Solve that ahead of time:

  • Order a box of donuts or cookies to arrive the first week of January.
  • Grab a cake and freeze slices for later.
  • If you’re in San Antonio, schedule free local delivery for your next gathering.

Knowing you have dessert handled makes Veganuary feel generous, not restrictive.

What Veganuary looks like when everyone’s invited

Imagine a January where:

  • The office birthday cupcakes don’t leave anyone out.
  • Your child with allergies can say “yes” when dessert is passed around.
  • Your family’s new tradition is Meatless Monday and a box of donuts on the counter.

That’s Veganuary as we see it at Southern Roots Vegan Bakery: a month to practice inclusion, joy, and small changes that might just last all year.

You don’t have to be perfect. You just have to start.
