Studies have shown that spending money on others feels better than splurging on ourselves. Even Psychology Today reported that research by social psychologist Liz Dunn and her colleagues shows that people's sense of happiness is greater when they spend relatively more on others than on themselves.

In a survey of over 600 U.S. people, Dunn's research found that even those with little money reported greater happiness when their spending on others, relative to the self, was greater.

Even the Dalai Lama noted in his book, Ethics for the New Millennium, that the happiness does not come from material things but rather from a deep, genuine concern for others' happiness. This is a principle that Buddhists call  "dependent origination."

So what type of gift should you give? Research from the University of Toronto Scarborough says that giving an experience strengthens your relationship with the receiver more than a physical gift. Experience gifts elicit stronger emotional responses while they are being enjoyed. What are experiential gifts?
