Black veganism is gaining steam! More and more Black Americans are slowly converting to a plant-based diet or forgoing meat two to three days a week. A Pew Center study in 2016 found that 8% of African Americans consider themselves vegan, which was higher than other races. What’s helping to fuel that growth?
For starters, celebrities like Lizzo, Colin Kaepernick, Serena/Venus Williams and Taraji P. Henson have identified as vegans. And Black youth are hitting veganism even harder and embracing it without fear. Jaden Smith, the son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, paid for a pop-up vegan food truck to feed the homeless in Los Angeles for his 21st birthday in 2019, and also that same year, Jay-Z and Beyoncé offered free tickets to fans if they went vegan.
Celebrities to sports stars are not only posting on social media about their vegan lifestyles, but they are investing in vegan products and launching some of their own. Venus Williams just introduced Happy Viking plant-protein shakes, and last month VegOut magazine featured 21 Black-Owned Vegan Food Brands to Support Right Now.
Black veganism has also flourished with the help of social media. VegNews recently featured the top 25 Black Vegan Instagrammers to Follow. They range in topics from nutrition and wellness, to eating a vegan, budget-friendly diet. Actress and influencer, Tabitha Brown, has a whopping 3 million followers on Instagram and keeps adding more with her creative food reviews.
Many of them also weave in social activism, such as Instagrammer Genesis Butler. She is just 14 and is teaching kids about how veganism, protecting animals and the planet are all intertwined. She was recently featured in two American Girl Doll books with other amazing young activists.
Southern Roots Vegan Bakery also hopes to spread some community love. For every bundle ordered, we will donate $1 to the San Antonio Food Bank in an effort to provide meals those in need.
